Klein Constantia

Klein Constantia Wine Estate

Described as one of the worlds most picturesque vineyards, Klein Constantia basks in the embrace of ancient trees and verdant foliage, gracing the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg. From this vantage point, sweeping vistas unfold across the Constantia Valley and False Bay, casting a spell of unparalleled beauty.

The sprawling 146-hectare estate of Klein Constantia traces its origins to "Constantia," an expansive property established in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the inaugural governor of the Cape. This valley was chosen not only for its breathtaking scenery but also for its decomposed granite soils, caressed by gentle ocean breezes.

Originating from granite formations dating back up to 600 million years, the soils of Klein Constantia are divided primarily between the deep, fertile Oakleaf on the lower slopes and the drier Glenrosa with a saprolite subsoil higher up. This well-drained, fertile decomposed granite, enriched with clay, ensures optimal water retention during the Cape's long, arid summers. The gradual release of water back into the vineyards fosters an effective leaf canopy and facilitates the proper ripening of the fruit.

At Klein Constantia, the convergence of unique location, climate, and soils underscores our commitment to crafting terroir-driven wines. Employing simple winemaking techniques, we unlock the essence of grapes nurtured in meticulously tended vineyards to produce consistently exceptional wines characterized by elegance, minerality, and balance.
